When Mahjong First Felt Overwhelming
For many of us at PLM, mahjong entered our lives during the COVID years. It often started the same way: a group of friends gathered at someone’s house, a hired instructor, a long lesson, and a lot of rules.
Those lessons were well-intentioned — and fun in their own way — but they were also… a lot.
Hours of instruction.
So many rules.
Very little actual play.
For some of us, it felt overwhelming. For others, it felt intimidating. And for many, it planted a quiet fear of “doing it wrong.”
Learning Happened When the Pressure Lifted
What changed everything wasn’t another lesson. It was playing with friends.
Little by little, we started picking the game back up — casually, imperfectly, often with the rule book nearby. Some of us formed monthly mahjong groups. Others played with neighbors. Some played once in a while, others more regularly.
And something surprising happened. The more we played, the more we realized:

It’s the shared understanding that learning never really stops.
