Things Mahjong Players Say vs. What They Actually Mean

Spend enough time around a mahjong table and you quickly realize that mahjong players have their own language.

Sure, there are the official terms—Charleston, pung, kong, joker, mahjong—but then there are the things mahjong players actually say.

And once you’ve played long enough, you know there is almost always a little more meaning behind them.

So, in the spirit of not taking ourselves too seriously, here are a few of our favorite things mahjong players say…and what they actually mean.

1. “I’ll just play one more game.”

What they actually mean: Clear my schedule for the next two hours.

There is no such thing as “one quick game” when everyone at the table is having fun. One game becomes two. Two becomes three. And suddenly someone is ordering dinner because apparently we live here now.

2. “I don’t really care if I win.”

What they actually mean: I care deeply.

Of course, we’re all here for the friendship and conversation. But also…we would very much like to mahj. Preferably before everyone else.

3. “I’m just going to look at the new tiles.”

What they actually mean: I have already decided which set I’m buying.

Every mahjong player knows this feeling. You absolutely do not need another set of tiles. But then you see a color you don't have, a new design launches or you start thinking about how cute they would look with your favorite mat… And, well, you know how this story ends.

4. “Wait…whose turn is it?”

What they actually mean: We have spent the last 12 minutes talking and completely stopped playing.

One of our favorite things about mahjong is that it gives everyone a reason to get around a table together. The downside? Sometimes the conversation gets so good that the actual mahjong game becomes secondary.

5. “I think I know what hand I’m doing.”

What they actually mean: I have narrowed it down to approximately seven possibilities.

You have the card out. You’ve found a hand. You have a plan. Actually, wait. Maybe this hand. Or that one. Or…hang on, what section are you in? Choosing a hand is half strategy, half commitment issues.

6. “I’m definitely not changing my hand.”

What they actually mean: Unless I draw literally one interesting tile.

You have committed. You are staying the course. Nothing could possibly make you change your mind. And then you draw one tile that opens up an entirely different possibility and suddenly the whole plan is out the window.

7. “I don’t need another mahjong set.”

What they actually mean: I don’t have one in THIS color.

To be fair, different mahjong sets serve different purposes. You need the everyday set. The pretty set. The travel set. The set that matches your house. The set that matches the mat you just bought. We don't make the rules.

8. “I’ll host!”

What they actually mean: I’ve already planned the tablescape, snacks and cocktails.

Hosting mahjong night is half playing mahjong and half having an excuse to make everything cute. The mat. The racks. The cups. The snacks. Maybe a signature cocktail. And yes, we fully support choosing your entire tablescape based on your mahjong tiles.

9. “This will be a quick game.”

What they actually mean: Someone is about to play the longest defensive game of her life.

Everyone starts optimistic. Then someone gets close. The discards become increasingly suspicious. Nobody is willing to throw anything useful. And that “quick game” turns into a full strategic battle.

10. “I’m bringing mahjong on vacation just in case.”

What they actually mean: We ARE playing mahjong on vacation.

There is no “just in case.” If a travel mahjong set made it into the suitcase, there will be mahjong. Beach house? Mahjong. Mountain weekend? Mahjong. Girls’ trip? Obviously mahjong. Once you become a mahjong player, every vacation rental is immediately evaluated by one very important criterion: Does it have a table big enough to play?

11. “You should learn! It’s so easy.”

What they actually mean: Welcome. This is about to become your entire personality.

This is how it starts. A friend invites you to learn. You spend the first lesson wondering how anyone remembers all of this. Then suddenly something clicks. Next thing you know, you own your own tiles, you're sending mahjong memes to the group chat and you're trying to convince every friend you have to learn. We've seen it happen a time or two. 😉

And finally…

12. “MAHJONG!”

What they actually mean: PLEASE LOOK AT MY HAND IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER BEEN PROUDER OF ANYTHING IN MY LIFE.

There really is nothing quite like it. You can try to play it cool, but when that final tile comes in and you get to call MAHJONG!, everyone at the table is going to see your hand. Immediately. And probably hear the story of exactly how you got there.

If You Know, You Know

The funny thing about all of these sayings is that they're part of what makes mahjong so much fun.

Yes, we love the strategy. We love the tiles. We love the thrill of finally getting the hand we've been working toward.

But more than anything, we love what happens around the mahjong table—the conversations, the inside jokes, the friendly competition and the friendships that keep us coming back for “just one more game.”

So tell us: Which one are you guilty of saying?

And if none of these sound familiar yet, it might just mean you need a little more mahjong in your life.
