We like to think we're all calm, strategic, perfectly reasonable adults around the mahjong table. And then someone throws the tile we've been waiting six turns for. Suddenly, all bets are off.
So, in the interest of honesty, we think it's time for a few mahjong confessions. These are the things we all do around the mahjong table...even if we don't always admit them.

Confession #1: We Rearrange Our Tiles Approximately 400 Times Per Game
Numbers together. Wait, maybe suits together. Jokers on the end. Actually, jokers in the middle. Nope. Start over.
There is absolutely no reason our tiles need to be reorganized this many times, and yet somehow rearranging them makes us feel like we have a plan.
Sometimes we do. Sometimes we're just moving things around and hoping inspiration strikes.
Confession #2: We Pretend We Weren't Waiting for That Discard
Someone throws a tile. It's THE tile. The one you've been silently begging the mahjong gods to send your way.But you can't look too excited.
You casually say..."Oh, I'll take that." Ma'am. You have been waiting six turns for that tile. We all know.
Confession #3: We Blame the Charleston
Bad hand? The Charleston.
No jokers? The Charleston.
Picked the wrong direction entirely and refused to pivot? Still probably the Charleston.
Sometimes you just have to accept that the Charleston did you dirty and move on.
Confession #4: We Get Emotionally Attached to a Hand
You know you should pivot. Every logical part of your brain is telling you to pivot. The tiles are telling you to pivot. Your friend looking over your shoulder would tell you to pivot.
But you've already invested six turns in this hand. You're not giving up now. This is no longer strategy. It's a relationship.
Confession #5: We Say We Don't Care About Winning
"I'm just here to have fun!"
Of course you are. You're here for friendship. You're here for connection. You're here for the snacks. But let's be clear: You would also very much like to win.
And if you happen to mahj before your friend who has won the last three games? Even better.
Confession #6: We Have Absolutely Judged a Slow Player
We're patient people.
We really are. But when someone has been staring at the card for what feels like nine minutes while holding a tile in the air... We're thinking it. We're not saying it. But we're thinking it. And yes, we remember being beginners too. 😂
Confession #7: We've Forgotten What Was Just Discarded Because We Were Talking
"Wait. What did you throw?"
Nobody knows. Because one person started telling a story, someone else asked a question, and suddenly all four players stopped paying attention to the actual game.
Honestly? This might be our favorite kind of mahjong problem.
Confession #8: We've Kept a Joker We Probably Should Have Used
There is something incredibly comforting about having a joker sitting safely on your rack. Could you use it? Yes. Should you use it? Probably. Are you going to? Absolutely not. That's your emotional-support joker now.
Confession #9: We Notice When Someone Has A LOT of Jokers
One joker? Fine. Two? Okay. Three? Now we're paying attention. Four? We need to discuss what's happening here. And yes, we're definitely counting.
Confession #10: We Have Mahjong Accessories We Absolutely Did Not “Need”
You start with: "I just need a set and a card."
Then somehow you have: A favorite mat. Multiple rack colors. Pushers. Special dice. A card clutch. A travel set. And possibly another tile set because those are completely different colors. Listen, we don't need judgment at this time.
Confession #11: We Replay the Game in Our Heads Later
You're brushing your teeth that night when suddenly...
WAIT.
You should have kept the 6 Bam. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM.
Mahjong: the game that keeps playing long after you've left the table.
Confession #12: We've All Said “One More Game”
And we have never, ever meant one more game. Everyone knows this. You say it at 8:30. Then again at 9:15. Then someone starts shuffling at 10:00. At this point, "one more game" is less of a statement and more of a mahjong tradition.
Confession #13: We Secretly Love the Drama
Someone calls a tile you needed. A joker gets exchanged. Someone's hand is exposed. You realize the person across from you is clearly going for the same section. And suddenly this friendly little game has become VERY SERIOUS.
Would we want actual drama at our mahjong table? Absolutely not. Mahjong drama? Give us all of it.
Confession #14: We Love Calling Mahjong More Than We Should
You can act casual all you want. But there is something deeply satisfying about finally getting that last tile, looking around the table and saying: "MAHJONG!"
Then everyone immediately wants to see your hand. And yes, you're going to explain exactly how you got there. You've earned this moment.
Confession #15: We Want Everyone Else to Become Obsessed Too
This may be the biggest confession of all.
Once you love mahjong, you can't just quietly enjoy it. You start recruiting.
"You HAVE to learn."
"Come play with us."
"I'll teach you!"
"Trust me, it seems confusing at first."
And before you know it, you've created another mahjong player who is rearranging her tiles 400 times and blaming the Charleston. Our work here is done. 😂
Okay, Your Turn...
How many of these are you guilty of?
Because if we're being truthful, we've probably done every single one.
That's part of what makes mahjong so much fun. It's strategic, competitive and occasionally ridiculous—but mostly, it's an excuse to gather around a table with people you love and laugh at ourselves along the way.
So consider this a judgment-free zone.
What's your mahjong confession?
