You've taken a mahjong class, have finally figured out the Charleston, and have officialy bought your first set of mahjong tiles.
And now four people are standing around the table asking: “Wait…how do we actually set this thing up?”
We’ve got you!
Setting up a mahjong table is much easier than it looks. Here’s your beginner-friendly guide to getting everything in place so you can spend less time wondering where the dice go and more time playing.
What You Need
For a game of American Mahjong, gather:
- 1 mahjong tile set
- 1 mahjong mat — optional, but your table (and your ears!) will thank you
- 4 racks & pushers
- 2 dice
- 4 current NMJL cards
- A set of shufflers (optional)
And, of course, four players.

Step 1: Put Your Mat Down & Set Out Your Racks
Center your mahjong mat on the table. Besides making your setup look cute, a mat helps protect your table, cuts down on tile noise and gives everyone a defined playing area.
Place one rack along each side of the mat so that every player has a rack directly in front of them.
Beginner tip: Your rack belongs closest to you, with the slotted portion facing you so you can see your tiles without showing everyone else.

Step 2: Dump Out the Tiles
This is the fun part. Pour your tiles out onto the table , mix them up, and turn all of the tiles face down.

Step 3: Build the Walls
Once the tiles are shuffled, each player builds a wall in front of their rack.
For a standard American Mahjong game (when playing with jokers & blanks), each wall is: 20 tiles long × 2 tiles high.
That means each player uses 40 tiles to build their wall. Once everyone is finished, you'll have four walls creating a square in the center of the table.

Step 4: Choose East
Someone needs to be East — aka the dealer. You can roll dice to determine East, use whatever house method you prefer, or designate a starting East for your first game. Once East is determined, you're ready to break the wall and deal.
Step 5: Deal the Tiles
The wall is broken according to the dice roll, and tiles are dealt around the table.
When the deal is complete: East starts with 14 tiles. Everyone else starts with 13 tiles.
Then everyone organizes their tiles on their rack, grabs their NMJL card and starts deciding what on earth they're going to do with the hand they were given.
Step 6: Charleston Time
Now that everyone has their tiles, you're ready for the Charleston. And from here? You're officially playing mahjong.
The Super-Simple Setup Cheat Sheet
MAT → RACKS → SHUFFLE → WALLS → EAST → DEAL → CHARLESTON → PLAY
Save that little sequence and suddenly setting the table feels a whole lot less intimidating.
One More Thing...
Your mahjong table does not have to look perfect. Your racks don't have to match. Your mat doesn't have to match your tiles. Your walls may be a little crooked. Someone will probably knock theirs over at some point.
The most important part of the game is just getting four people around the table and having fun! You got this, girl!!
